Volunteering Roles
We have a number of roles
Garden volunteer – got a spare morning and would love to be outdoors enjoying all the wellbeing benefits. It doesn’t matter what you know about gardening or how mobile you are, there are jobs for everyone.
Session volunteers – we always need help with the sessions for older people. It’s so rewarding to hear their stories and to help them in the garden with some light gardening tasks.
Meet some of our Volunteers

Mick
“I joined Five A Day to help contribute to the local community as I have recently retired. Working outside in such beautiful surroundings is a joy and a privilege and it brings great health benefits be working outside in the natural environment. Yvonne and all the other volunteers are good company and very friendly. I am so pleased I joined.”

Molly
“I’m Molly and my journey with Five a Day began in the summer of 2023 when I first volunteered on a corporate volunteering day. Volunteering at the community market garden is incredibly meaningful to me as it allows me to actively contribute to the well-being of our local community. Witnessing the positive impact of our collective efforts is fulfilling, and I find joy in spending time socialising with other dedicated volunteers. As we work together, sharing stories and laughter, the experience goes beyond community contribution – it’s about building friendships with like-minded individuals who share a passion for both gardening and fostering community spirit.”

Liz
“I love being at Five a Day Garden, it does me a power of good to be there. I love the rich soil and the wonderful vegetables and flowers we grow, and I get a great deal of pleasure from all the gardening jobs: planting out, composting, pruning , weeding and harvesting. The compost loo has been great, it’s one of my favourite bits of the garden and it fits well into our organic ethos.
Birds and animals are keen on our vegetables and fruit and we have to fight them off as best we can, with netting, fences and gates. We still seem to have a lot of produce to sell at the kiosk.
Perhaps best of all, I love the brilliant team I work with. We have Sue-who-knows-everything, Kris the Viking, superUna, Christine in Marketing.. just to name four of us. I could go on. They are many-talented and great fun, we have good times together and I have learned a great deal. I am grateful that I can just turn up and enjoy it, and I don’t have to think about the time-consuming, behind the scenes running of such a large team of volunteers. When I arrive for my volunteering morning, there’s always a huge amount of progress since the last one because the other groups have ben beavering away, and perhaps a corporate group have been in to add their enthusiasm and muscle to a heavy task.
It’s satisfying and good for the soul, a real tonic.”
